JAVIER AND ARA
Javier, Ara, and their two boys aged 15 and 8 live in Katy, TX in a neighborhood that was completely devastated when Harvey hit. When purchasing their home, no one advised them to carry flood insurance because their neighborhood was never expected to flood. So, like 95% of their neighbors, Javier and Ara decided against purchasing flood insurance. The floodwaters rose to 3 feet inside their home and sat for 7 days. By the time the floodwaters finally receded, mold had crept up the walls and the smell was so strong that they couldn’t enter the house for more then a few minutes even with masks.
Javier and his father in law cleaned out the house in the weeks following the storm. They went back and forth debating on what could be saved. They attempted to salvage the refrigerator and dishwasher at one point. Since the water sat for so long, the home had to be gutted to the studs. Both cars also were lost in the flood. Javier says some days are better then others. When you lose everything in your life that you worked so hard to get, it can be an emotional roller coaster. Javier said “Why did this happen to me. I pay my mortgage and my taxes, follow the HOA rules and work hard at my job.”
During the storm, Javier kayaked across the street to save his elderly neighbors. He saw the panic on their faces and brought them back to his home. Javier also took in another family down the street. These neighbors all spent the night upstairs with Javier and his family while they waited to be rescued.
